Returning Head Basketball Coach Named New Athletic Director of Broome High School

RETURNING HEAD BASKETBALL COACH NAMED NEW ATHLETIC DIRECTOR OF BROOME HIGH SCHOOL

In a unanimous vote, the District Three Board of Trustees has named Coach Hal McManus as the new athletic director at Gettys D. Broome High School as he also makes his return as head basketball coach. "Whenever you mention the name 'Hal McManus' in our District Three community, it only comes with the highest of praise, which makes this announcement even more exciting," Board Chairman Chris Jolley said. "Hal McManus is coming home to District Three, and our school board is thrilled to have him back to continue with the successes he had here before. Welcome back, Coach!" McManus has decades of experience as an athletic director in several locations, as well as playing and coaching several sports, including basketball and football. During his tenure at Broome High School from 1999-2010, McManus helped lead the basketball team to several championships, including their wins as Regional Champions in 2004, 2005, and 2006, Upper State Champions in 2005 and 2006, and State Champions in 2005. He was also named Spartanburg Herald Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2006 and the High School Sports Report AA Coach of the Year in 2005, among dozens of other accomplishments. "Spartanburg School District Three and Broome High School will always be home for me and my family. My two children grew up in the gym at Broome. I have so many special memories at Broome and I am excited to return to a place that was so good to our family. The relationships that we built there are for a lifetime. The District Three Community took us in as family from day one," McManus said. "I told my wife several years ago that I would love to go back to Broome and finish my career. I am so thankful that God opened this door for me to return. I want to thank Dr. Fowler, Mr. Graves, Coach Fleming, and the Spartanburg School District Three School Board for trusting me to lead the athletic department and basketball program once again. I am looking forward to returning home and building more special memories.” McManus will begin serving in the role of Athletic Director on July 1, 2023. "Our District Three community is thrilled to have Coach McManus home and at the helm," Superintendent Julie Fowler said. "Thank you to the Board of Trustees for supporting him as both the head basketball coach and the new Athletic Director at Broome High School. I am looking forward to what the future holds for our Centurions! Conquer and Prevail!" Current Athletic Director Lynn Fleming will continue his role as head football coach for the Broome Centurions.
